During this time, John became involved with Ducks Unlimited. Several of his waterfowl paintings were donated and auctioned to help support the Ducks Unlimited cause. He placed second in the Wisconsin Duck Stamp Contest in 1980 and continues to compete in the Federal Duck Stamp competition.
John has shown a keen interest in western art also, and has created a number of works focusing on Native Americans and the fur trade era. The paintings depict an historical nature and the story is set in motion in the painting and left to the viewer to finish.
John's skill as an artist was not developed by extensive training, but resulted from a desire to develop a God-given ability. Being a Christian, it is John's desire to portray God's creatures in their natural environment, just as He created them.
John and his wife Terri presently reside in the mountains of Northeastern Washington. The rural setting of this area is very inspirational for both wildlife and western art.
